Serae’s Science: NAC — What It Is and Why We Use It

When it comes to supporting long-term wellness, some ingredients work quietly behind the scenes. One of those is N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), a well-researched form of the amino acid cysteine that helps support the body’s natural antioxidant defenses.

At Serae, we included NAC as part of our whole-body approach to women’s wellness because of its role in supporting glutathione, one of the body’s most important naturally occurring antioxidants.

What Is NAC?

N-Acetyl Cysteine, commonly known as NAC, is a stable form of the amino acid cysteine. Once absorbed, the body can use cysteine to help produce glutathione, one of the body’s most important naturally occurring antioxidants.

Glutathione is found throughout the body and plays an important role in helping cells manage oxidative stress—an imbalance that can occur when the production of free radicals exceeds the body’s antioxidant defenses.

Why Glutathione Matters

Every day, normal processes within the body—as well as external factors—can contribute to the production of free radicals and oxidative stress.

These can include:

  • Normal metabolic processes
  • Environmental exposures
  • Physical stress
  • Aging

Glutathione is one of the body’s primary antioxidants and helps support its natural antioxidant defense system.

Because cysteine is one of the building blocks the body uses to produce glutathione, NAC has become an area of significant scientific interest.

Why Serae Includes NAC

At Serae, we don’t believe wellness comes down to a single ingredient. We believe in thoughtfully combining ingredients that support the body’s natural functions.

We intentionally included NAC because it:

  • Provides cysteine, a precursor used in glutathione production
  • Supports the body’s natural antioxidant defenses
  • Complements our whole-body approach to women’s wellness

NAC provides a building block the body can use as part of its own natural antioxidant processes.

NAC in Research

NAC has also been studied in combination with other antioxidants. In the 2018 LEAP study, researchers followed 398 women with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain who received a combination of NAC, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), bromelain, and zinc over six months. The study reported improvements in pelvic pain as well as a decreased need for additional pain medication.

This research helped inform Serae’s formulation. We intentionally included NAC, ALA, bromelain, and zinc—the four ingredients studied together in LEAP—as part of our thoughtful, whole-body approach to women’s wellness.

A Science-First Approach

Every ingredient in Serae is chosen with intention. We prioritize ingredients supported by scientific research that contribute to a balanced, whole-body wellness philosophy.

NAC is one part of that larger picture, helping support the body’s natural antioxidant defenses as part of a thoughtfully formulated blend.
