Your Body Is Connected: The Link Between Hormones, Immunity, and Everyday Wellness

When we think about hormones, we often think about our menstrual cycle.

When we think about our immune system, we think about getting sick.

But the body doesn’t actually work in separate categories. Our hormonal, immune, nervous, metabolic, and reproductive systems are constantly communicating with one another—and understanding those connections is a big part of how we think about women’s wellness at Serae.

The body doesn't work in silos. Hormones are chemical messengers that help regulate processes throughout the body—from energy, mood, and sleep to metabolism, reproductive health, stress response, and immune activity.

And that relationship goes both ways. Hormones can influence immune activity, while signaling molecules produced by the immune system can interact with endocrine pathways. In other words, hormonal health and immune health aren't two completely separate conversations.

Changing the Way We Think About Women's Health

This whole-body perspective is particularly personal to Serae.

Our founder, Carly Roland, has lived with endometriosis for more than a decade. Her experience challenged the idea that a disease associated with the reproductive system necessarily begins and ends there.

While endometriosis has traditionally been approached primarily as a gynecological disease, researchers continue to investigate a more complex picture involving inflammation, immune activity, hormonal signaling, pain pathways, and effects beyond the reproductive system.

That evolving understanding reflects something we believe strongly at Serae: the body doesn't operate in silos, and women's wellness shouldn't be viewed that way either.

Your immune system does more than fight illness. It isn't something that switches on only when you catch a cold. It's active every day, helping the body respond to its environment, repair tissue, and maintain normal function.

There is also extensive communication between the immune and endocrine systems. Estrogen, for example, can influence immune responses, while immune signaling molecules can interact with hormonal pathways.

Whole-body wellness isn't about finding one solution. Sleep, nutrition, movement, stress management, hydration, and meeting the body's nutritional needs all matter. Taking a whole-body approach simply means recognizing that long-term wellness is influenced by many things working together.

The Thinking Behind Serae

This perspective helped shape Serae from the beginning.

When we developed our formula, we started with the understanding that women’s health is interconnected. Hormonal signaling, immune function, inflammation, and oxidative stress don’t exist in isolation—and research increasingly explores how these pathways interact, particularly in complex conditions like endometriosis.

That thinking informed the ingredients we intentionally brought together:

  • NAC — supports the production of glutathione, one of the body’s primary antioxidants.

  • Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) — supports antioxidant defenses and healthy redox balance.

  • Vitamin D3 — supports normal immune function and plays a role in numerous processes throughout the body.

  • Zinc — supports normal immune function and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

  • Quercetin — has been studied for its relationship with inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways.

  • Bromelain — has been studied for its relationship with inflammatory pathways and alongside other complementary compounds.

We were also interested in how some of these ingredients have been researched together. In the 2018 LEAP study, NAC, alpha-lipoic acid, bromelain, and zinc were studied together in women with endometriosis-associated pelvic pain. The research was part of what helped inform our formulation.

For us, the goal was never to focus on one hormone or one pathway. It was to intentionally bring together ingredients that support different, interconnected aspects of women's wellness.

Because women's bodies are complex. We believe the way we support them should acknowledge that complexity.
